The most classic and wanted destinations of Serra Gaúcha. Two cities that together make the joy of travelers at all times of the year. Gramado and Canela are located in the Hortense Region, which consists of five municipalities: Gramado, Canela, Nova Petrópolis, São Francisco de Paula (which also integrates the Campos de Cima da Serra) and Picada Café.

Events tourism – such as Christmas Light and Easter in Gramado and Canela – gastronomy, and the theme and natural parks contribute to the region being a reference in hospitality.

It is still considered the main tourist destination of Rio Grande do Sul, and has attractions for couples, families, children, canyons and those seeking a relaxed climate. Just choose the script for your style, and the region has options for you.

German colonization

The Germans left a remarkable impression in the history of the Rio Grande do Sul through their culture. The colonization of the Hortense Region is mostly German and architecture and gastronomy bring this strong influence, with the built-in wood and several other inspirations brought from the Bavarian region.

In gastronomy, some items are landmarks of the region, but colonial cafes, typical German food restaurants and the fondue itself - more properly Swiss, but also widely consumed in northern Germany - are must-see categories.

Christmas and Easter festivities

Christmas festivities are a great tourist asset of the Hortense Region and one of the most lively periods for a visit with children. The cities of Gramado and Canela transform with decorations for absolutely all the places and attractions created especially for this time of year, in its vast majority open. These festivities usually extend until mid-January bringing several attractions within the Christmas Light in Gramado, and the Christmas Dream in Canela.

During the Easter period, the streets of these picturesque cities adorn themselves with thematic decorations, including coloured rabbits and giant eggs, creating a magical setting that attracts visitors of all ages. In addition, events such as theme shows and craft workshops provide entertainment for the whole family. Local cuisine also stands out, offering delights like handmade chocolates, which make Gramado and Canela unmissable destinations for those who want to experience an unforgettable Easter in Serra Gaúcha.

How to get there

The cities are about 2h from Porto Alegre by car, on average 100km. For those who are not in Rio Grande do Sul, the tip is to get directly at Salgado Filho Airport, the main of the state. From there bus go directly to the road from Gramado hour to hour.

The most comfortable options are the transfers, which make the route from the airport directly to the hotel. By car is also a good option - although the use of the car is not essential for tourism within the cities. Another option for those who come from outside the state, is the airport of Caxias do Sul, also in Serra Gaúcha. It is about 1h30 by car and there is also bus option between the cities.

When I go

Choosing the season to get to know the Horny Region depends on your travel style. In the summer the region has warm climate and very pleasant temperature nights, which arouses interest in outdoor tours, whether in the centers of the cities, or to enjoy the natural attractions. In winter, low temperatures and snow odds create the cold weather postcard that is also so expected in the region. It is undoubtedly the most charming season, perfect for romantic trips.
